The idea

Stories stay in the places
you leave behind.

You set up camp in a riverside clearing: a campfire, a bed, and a chest. In the morning, you put out the fire, follow the river, and forget all about the place.

Some time later, the path brings you back. Tall grass and flowers have grown around the camp, and the campfire is lit again: a traveler has passed through. In VESTIGE, places keep moments like this, not every step, and coming back becomes part of the adventure.

How it works

Every passage
leaves a vestige.

Choose a place and compare two moments: what you did there and what you find when you come back.

Explore a mine

  1. The passageWhat you did

Concept artThe passage: the torch-lined trail to the mine.

    A familiar trail

Expedition after expedition, you follow the same path from the forest to an old mine. Your torches mark the trail.

  2. The vestigeWhat you find when you return

The same diorama, from the same angle, some time later: an explorer waits at the mine entrance, out in the sunlight at the end of the trail, beside a crate with an open map marking a route. Behind them, a lit lantern hangs from the entrance beam and fills the mouth of the mine with warm light.

    A map at the entrance

An explorer noticed your trail and followed it. At the mine entrance, they left a proposal for an expedition: a route toward a hidden chamber.

Help a village

  1. The passageWhat you did

Voxel diorama of a village square: wooden houses around a freshly rebuilt stone well with a new roof and a bucket on a rope. A few spare stones sit beside it.
Concept artThe passage: the rebuilt well.

    The well in the square

The well at the center of the village has collapsed. You rebuild it stone by stone and move on.

  2. The vestigeWhat you find when you return

The same square, from the same angle, some time later: the spare stones are gone, and a cart loaded with crates, with a striped awning and a mule in harness, stands beside the rebuilt well. The trader waits out in the sunlit square holding a rolled parchment, and a tall new signpost points down a road leading out of the village.
Concept artThe vestige: the trader, the cart, and a new signpost on the road.

    A new route

Some time later, a local trader returns to the village with a new trade route and a request for you. The trader’s cart stops beside the well you rebuilt.

  2. The vestigeWhat you find when you return

The same clearing, from the same angle, some time later: tall grass and flowers surround the bed and chest, two young birches have taken root, and the campfire burns again in its ring of stones, sending up a thin plume of smoke.

The passage

A familiar trail

Expedition after expedition, you follow the same path from the forest to an old mine. Your torches mark the trail.

How places
get their stories

Here are three of the systems guiding the development of VESTIGE, each told through a scene.

Regional memory

The place keeps
what matters.

After several expeditions along the same path, the old mine has a history, and it’s yours. VESTIGE doesn’t count the ore you mine or the blocks you break inside. What the place keeps is the pattern of your visits: that trail has become part of your journey.

Places remember meaningful moments, not every step.

Connected encounters

Someone followed
your trail.

When you return to the mine, an explorer is waiting at the entrance, beside an open map on a crate. They noticed your trail, followed it, and left you a proposal for an expedition: a route toward a hidden chamber.

What you did before becomes the reason for what happens next.

Evolving places

A rebuilt well
opens a new route.

You rebuild the well at the center of the village and move on. Some time later, a local trader returns to the village with a new trade route and a request for you. The trader’s cart stops beside the well, and a new signpost points down the road. The trader isn’t here by chance: the well is the reason.

Returning to a familiar place can reveal something new.

The Vestige Journal

Every remembered place gets an entry: where it is, what happened there, and what you found when you came back. The journal reads like an explorer’s notebook, not a table of statistics, and it keeps giving you reasons to head back out.

Example entry

The old mine trail

Place
Mine entrance.
Event
Several expeditions along the same path.
Vestige
An explorer followed the trail and left a proposal for an expedition.

Illustrative entries. In your world, the places will be your own.

Installation

Two ways
to install

  • Automatic installer

    Recommended

    The simplest route

Download the installer for your system, run it, and follow the instructions. It handles the VESTIGE files, so you don’t need to copy the .jar by hand.

    • Available
  • .jar for manual installation

For players who manage their own instance

You place the VESTIGE .jar in the mods folder of a compatible instance and start the matching profile. The same mod, your way.

    • Available

For Windows and Linux: one installer for each system and a single .jar for both.

We’re working to make VESTIGE available on Modrinth and CurseForge. For now, publication on these platforms is in preparation.

Quick questions

Can I download it yet?

Yes. The downloads page shows the files available for your system, with their compatibility details.

What’s the difference between the installer and the .jar?

The installer is the simplest route: you run it, and it handles the VESTIGE files. The .jar is the mod file itself, for players who manage their own instance and prefer to install manually.

Which Minecraft version and mod loader do I need?

VESTIGE 1.0.3 is compatible with Minecraft 1.21.11, using Fabric 0.16.5 or newer. Each file’s details are on the downloads page.

Does it work on Bedrock, mobile, or console?

VESTIGE is a mod for Minecraft: Java Edition on Windows and Linux. No support has been announced for Bedrock, mobile, or console.
