Guide

The two ways to install VESTIGE, what’s known about compatibility so far, and answers to the most common questions.

Choose your path

Installing with the automatic installer

Available

The installer is available for Windows and Linux on the downloads page.

What you’ll need

  • A computer running Windows or Linux.
  • Your copy of Minecraft: Java Edition.
  • The VESTIGE installer for your system, from the downloads page.
  • Any other requirements are listed under Compatibility.

How it works

  1. 1

    Download the installer.

Choose the installer for your system, Windows or Linux.

  2. 2

    Run the setup wizard.

Open the downloaded file on your computer and follow the on‑screen instructions.

  3. 3

    Open the compatible profile.

When the installation is complete, open the compatible profile in your launcher and start playing.

What the installer does

It handles the VESTIGE files for you, so you don’t need to copy the .jar by hand. It doesn’t install Minecraft: VESTIGE is added to the game you already have.

Manual installation with the .jar

Available

The .jar file is available on the downloads page.

Who it’s for

Players who manage their own Minecraft instance and prefer to install mods by hand.

How it works

  1. 1

    Prepare the announced setup.

Use the Minecraft: Java Edition version and mod loader listed for the VESTIGE release.

  2. 2

    Choose the right instance.

Open the instance you’ll play VESTIGE in.

  3. 3

Put the .jar in the mods folder.

Copy the VESTIGE .jar file into that instance’s mods folder.

  4. 4

    Start the matching profile.

Launch the game with the profile that uses that same setup.

Good to know

  • The .jar is a single file for Windows and Linux.
  • Each launcher keeps its instances in a different place, so the location of the mods folder varies.
  • Always use the instance that matches the setup announced for the VESTIGE release.

Frequently asked
questions

What is VESTIGE?

VESTIGE is an exploration and survival mod for Minecraft: Java Edition. Places keep a few meaningful moments from your journey, like your repeated expeditions along the same trail to a mine. When you return, an encounter, a discovery, or a consequence may be waiting for you there.

What’s the difference between the installer and the .jar?

The automatic installer is a program you run on your computer: it handles the VESTIGE files for you. The .jar is the mod file itself, for players who manage their own instance and prefer to install mods by hand. The installer is the simplest route.

Which operating systems does VESTIGE support?

Windows and Linux, with an automatic installer for each system and a single .jar file that works on both. The downloads page shows which files are available right now. No support has been announced for other operating systems.

Which Minecraft version and mod loader do I need?

VESTIGE 1.0.3 is compatible with Minecraft 1.21.11, using Fabric 0.16.5 or newer. Each file’s details are on the downloads page.

Can I download it yet?

Yes. VESTIGE 1.0.3 is on the downloads page, with each available file and its compatibility details.

Will it be on Modrinth and CurseForge?

We’re working on it. Publication on both platforms is in preparation. When the project pages are live, the links will appear here and on the downloads page.

Do I need to copy the .jar if I use the installer?

No. That’s exactly the step the installer is meant to handle: it installs the VESTIGE files for you. The specific instructions for each release will be here in the guide.

Does it work on Bedrock, mobile, or console?

VESTIGE is a mod for Minecraft: Java Edition on Windows and Linux. No support has been announced for Bedrock Edition, phones, tablets, or consoles.

Can I install it in an existing world or on a server?

We don’t have that answer yet. Compatibility with existing worlds and with servers hasn’t been announced, and we don’t want to suggest a procedure before we know it’s safe. When there’s confirmed information, you’ll find it here.
